GoDirt Racing #44

Home

After a night of racing in Davenport, we were glad to have a race under our belt. Over the week we got the car ready to race at Farley, somewhere close to home. Farley and Dubuque Speedway’s are each having 3 IMCA Late Model races throughout the season. This week was the first of three on the schedule. Over the off season, Farley Speedway has built a 3/8 mile track inside of there ½ mile track. This would be the first race on the 3/8 mile. It was nice not having to drive over an hour to get to the track. Once we arrived at Farley we unloaded the car and started checking things over. Since Independence has not started racing yet, there were a lot of cars from there. It was cool to see some familiar faces. Luke went out for hot laps and the car looked good. When Luke pulled in he said the motor wasn’t running right. We changed the jets in the carburetor and hoped that fixed the problem because we were going to start on the pole in our heat. There were 20 IMCA Late Models on hand. When the green flag dropped in our heat, Luke took off. Dirk Hamilton challenged us for the lead in the early laps. Luke went on to win the heat race with a comfortable lead over Curt Martin. Luke looked really good once again, but when he pulled the car in he said it was running horrible. “I didn’t think the motor would last the whole race” Luke said after winning the heat race. We pulled the spark plugs out, checked the distributor and found nothing wrong. We started to get worried when we weren’t sure what the problem was. We then came to the conclusion that the engine wasn’t getting enough fuel and it was missing and cutting out. We raised the float level in the carburetor and hoped that would be the fix. If the motor was running good, Luke was going to give us a thumbs up under the first caution. Luke redrew the number 10 after the heat race which would mean that Luke would have to start the feature in tenth place. We changed tires and made some adjustments for the feature. On the green flag Luke got off to a good start. Within about 4 laps there was a caution. Luke was in 7th place and moving forward. We saw Luke give us the thumbs up, meaning the motor was running well, which was a big sigh of relief. Luke continued to pick off cars and late in the race he was up to 4th place. In the closing laps Luke passed a car for third, and challenged for second. On the last corner of the last lap the fourth place car came into the turn wide open, flew by us and ran into the Curt Martin who was running in second. Luke was able to somehow avoid the wreck and cross the finish line second. Jeff Aikey won with us behind. It was an exciting night of racing, especially on the new track. We were glad to race close to home, first time in a long time. And it was also nice to move forward, and put on a good show. We look forward to coming back for all the other IMCA races, and our plans are to race Davenport until the season starts at Independence. We will keep you up to date.
